Pros and Cons of Living in a Tourist Town All Year
Ocean City Maryland is one of the most popular east coast beach tourist towns on the Atlantic Coast. That being said, many people instantly fall in love with it and consider moving in year-round. But what is it like to live in a tourist town? The truth is there are a few drawbacks that people may not realize, but they really are small in comparison to the countless benefits of living in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
The drawbacks of living in a tourist town full-time
It takes a while to become a true local
Most often tourist communities have a small population of full-time residents. This causes anyone new moving in to stick out amongst those who have been in the area for some time. Tourist towns tend to be tight-knit communities that are small where everyone knows everyone else that lives there full-time. Because of this, new residents tend to stick out and be considered as just another tourist.
In some tourist towns, it can take a little bit longer as compared to moving into your average suburban or urban area. Sometimes it is only merely because people wish to know that you truly are committed to sticking around.
The cost of living in tourist areas tends to be a bit higher as compared to other areas. Sometimes this is due to being able to get goods in and out of the location. In other cases, it is simply because some businesses have to adjust their costs to continue to be able to do business in an area where their sales numbers greatly fluctuate. They have to be able to stay afloat during the lean times in an off-peak season.
The inconveniences that come with a surge in seasonal population
Tourist season can be a bit of a nuisance to try and do activities that you enjoy because more people are there enjoying those same activities. This creates longer wait times to do things like getting into your favorite restaurant. With this large wave of people can also come to some less-than-ideal characters that do not have the same respect for the area or are trying to glean from and take advantage of tourists when they may be letting their guard down.
The many advantages of living in a tourist town
A destination does not become a popular tourist destination with a lack of things to do. Tourist areas most often have a great collection of amazing restaurants and cafés as well as several entertainment venues to keep people busy and coming back for another tourist season.
And when the tourists go back home those that live locally get to take advantage of those amazing places all year long with no crowds in the off-season.
Better care of infrastructure
Tourist areas will have well-maintained beaches, public parks, roads, sidewalks, and community necessities. This is because if these areas aren’t groomed and well taken care of nobody would come back to take a vacation. When people are on vacation, they want to be in a place that is clean and well-kept not one that feels littered with trash and overgrown landscaping.
Convenient means to travel transportation
Areas of high tourist traffic most often are not far from transportation to get them from one destination to another. This means that those who live in a travel destination can benefit from being close to places like airports that allow them to more easily travel when they wish to go on vacation.
Rental income and resell ability
Becoming a real estate investor in a tourist town gives you the opportunity to almost never have to worry about having tenants in your rental property. If you purchase a home for yourself and find yourself needing to resell it someday it also gives you the benefit of an easier sell being in a highly desirable location.
Less stress-filled culture and community feel
The atmosphere in tourist towns is for the most part one that is less hectic and stressful and happier in day-to-day life. This comes from many attributes, two of the main ones being that you are amongst the most beautiful outdoor scenery and that most people are generally happy and full of cheerful life when on vacation.
